1. Could you please give us a little introduction and tell us about your first experience with photography? Who or what inspired you to begin?
My name is Rita, and to be honest, photography has always been my passion, even when I only had a basic point-and-shoot camera that I carried with me everywhere (from clubs to a simple walk in the city). I remember receiving my first film Canon camera for Christmas when I didn’t even know how to use it, but I still had a blast experimenting with it. I can’t quite pinpoint where my inspiration comes from, but I do know that I’ve always loved the power of photos to capture a moment in time.
Travel photography has always been a favorite of mine, but it wasn’t until 2010 that I decided to take courses and expand my skills to sports photography, which required more advanced equipment and knowledge. Then, in 2018, I discovered my love for wedding and couple photography, which has brought me a great deal of fulfillment ever since. There’s just something special about incorporating people into my photos and telling their unique stories.
2. From your point of view, what are the most exciting aspects of professional photography?
One of the things I adore about my job is the level of creativity required for each and every shoot. Even when it might appear that I’m doing something similar, there’s always a unique twist that pushes my creative boundaries and allows me to bring my vision to life.
Moreover, collaborating and working alongside other professionals in the industry is incredibly rewarding. It’s amazing to see how everyone’s skills and expertise come together to create something truly special. And to read their comments when they open the download file and see what I saw in what they also helped create.
3. As the expert you are, what distinguishes your work from other photographers?
As an editorial photographer, I strive to bring a unique perspective to my work. I like to think that my vision sets me apart from other photographers in the field, and one of the ways I achieve this is by relying on natural light. There’s something special about the uncontrolled and unpredictable nature of natural light that I find captivating, whether it be lens flares or when I use my prisms. It adds an element of authenticity and rawness that I adore. My editing style is also something I am proud of: it mixes romantic vibes with some more “vintage” colors, as people like to describe it, too.
4. What are your goals for the next year with your photography business?
At present, my focus as a photographer is primarily on destination weddings and elopements so when it comes to editorials, it’s mostly fun and some experimentation for me. My goal is to travel as much as possible and capture as many beautiful and unique weddings and elopements as I can. I’m thrilled to say that 2022 has been an incredible year for me in this regard, and I’m looking forward to continuing this momentum throughout the rest of the year.
Editorial photography helps me stay creative and not burn out, and I hope that some paid work might come in, but if not, that’s also fine.
5. Are there any other photographers you look up to? Who?
Absolutely! I draw inspiration from many photographers in the wedding industry, both from the US and Eastern Europe. For instance, I adore the romantic and moody style of Gaby Scheer and The Kitcheners. They create such a captivating atmosphere in their photos that I find them truly inspiring.
When it comes to editorial photography, I’m particularly drawn to the work of Emanuele Boffa and Mirko Sperlonga, for example, but I also love Darla Winn (who is amazing and has my kind of weird dark view). Their use of color, composition, and light is simply breathtaking, and I find myself constantly learning from their work.
6. Can you walk us through your planning process for this photoshoot?
I like to keep things simple. I draw inspiration from various art forms such as paintings, sculptures, and songs that evoke certain feelings and emotions within me. I have a few favorites from each category, and I mostly go back to them every time. From there, I look for a dress or fashion designer that will fit the mood and specific items that I have in mind. Once I had a clear concept, I put together a team of professionals that I believed would be best suited for the project.
Thankfully, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a network of friends who are also talented hair and makeup artists and jewelry designers, which makes the creative process even more enjoyable. When I have my team in place, I scout for the perfect location to bring the vision to life. So far, this method has worked perfectly for me, and I’ve been able to create some truly amazing projects.
7. What are your upcoming projects?
Currently, I have a few bridal editorials in mind, and I’m also working on editing some of my recent projects. However, my mind is constantly churning with ideas for upcoming photoshoots. I’m particularly drawn to the idea of incorporating an abundance of flowers into my next shoot; it’s definitely something I’d love to explore further!
