Johana VALA: Beauty

CALEB SCHAFTLEIN,

Could you please provide us with a professional introduction about yourself and your photography work?

Full name

My name is Johana Vala, I am a professional model. I love to work on sophisticated and elegant projects.

Can you tell us about how you got started in photography?

I started as a model when I was asked to participate to a runway show organised by Miss Guadeloupe’s hairdresser

What was your passion driving you during your journey? Who or what prompted you to begin?

My passion was inspired by beauty pageants that my family and I were watching on TV. My mom ( Maryvonne Brissac), encouraged me to start my modeling career as she was a model herself.

Could you walk us through your photoshoot planning process?

The first step for me is to discuss with the photographer and the client to see what genre and idea they want the pictures to reflect.

After that, I can adapt, focusing on the original idea. For example, some clients prefer my natural curly hair as others want them straight!

As a photography expert, what sets your work apart from other photographers ?

I think my work is different because I add a very feminine touch to it. I love to work with flowers, sparkles, laces, high heels looking for what compliments the picture better.

Where do you get your ideas for photoshoots?

I get some ideas from magazines like Vogue, Elle, or Harper's Bazaar

Can you tell us about the most memorable moment you've had as a photographer and what experience you gained from that?

I had the chance and the honor to work with Roza Sampolinska in Boston, she is an amazing photographer, and her work inspires me the most. The minute I saw what she does, I thought “ I want to work with her !”

That reinsure me that I love to work on elegant and feminine photoshoots.

What are the most important components of an extraordinary photograph, in your opinion?

I think that the most important components of an extraordinary photograph is the light and the position of the subject in the picture. You can get an amazing picture by finding the right angle!

Can you tell us about the most difficult photographic challenge you've ever had, including lighting, unexpected situations, and how you managed the issues on set?

The most challenging photoshoot I did was while filming my short film Naya, Nativity Of Nature in Guadeloupe. We had to walk for 6 hours in the tropical forest… The photographer asked me to stand on top of a rock while I was wearing a 13 feet long dress. It was difficult; but we had a super nice result!

What are your top tips for aspiring photographers on skill development and finding their own creative voice? How did you develop yours?

If you work in a studio, get good lights and different background colors. If you don’t work in a studio, learn how to capture the right angles and expressions in people. Plus get a class in photoshop, so you can edit your own pictures instead of asking someone else.

What is your favorite piece of work you've ever shot? (Include links)

So far, it’s my profile pictures that I shot with Roza Sampolinska.

Can you tell me about an upcoming project you're working on and the idea behind it?

I have many photoshoots coming, mostly for magazines. I am so excited about it and I can’t wait to share it with you all !

Can you tell us the story behind creating the photographs you submitted?

I was in New York then I found on instagram a french photographer that worked in the city. I was like “Oh my god, I need to book a photoshoot with her”. I found the studio of Your Hollywood Portrait very professional and organized. She gave me a gown, and accessories, everything to make the photoshoot memorable. The pictures went excellent and I was very touched by the fact that she spoke fluently French. I am very grateful for this experience.
