Marina Manucharyan: Urban Escapism

CALEB SCHAFTLEIN,

Could you please provide us with a professional introduction about yourself and your photography work? Full name

My name is Marina Manucharyan, and I am a fashion stylist from Kazakhstan. I have been working in the fashion industry for several years. My focus is on creating unique looks that combine style with individuality. I love to explore how fashion can reflect personal identity, especially in the fast-paced, urban world. My recent work focuses on themes like individuality and modern life.

Can you tell us about the most difficult photographic challenge you've ever had, including lighting, unexpected situations, and how you managed the issues on set?

Once, we encountered unexpected weather changes during an outdoor shoot. We had to improvise with lighting and adapt quickly. This experience taught me to stay flexible and creative in any situation.

Can you tell us the story behind creating the photographs you submitted?

The series I submitted is titled "Urban Escapism. The modern struggle to preserve individuality under urban pressure." The idea came from observing how people strive to stand out despite stereotypes and social norms. Fashion becomes a tool for self-expression and freedom.

What are your top tips for aspiring photographers on skill development and finding their own creative voice? How did you develop yours?

Always stay curious and open to experimentation. Find your unique style by working on diverse projects and learning from different sources of inspiration. Building a signature style takes time and experience, so don’t rush the process—enjoy it.

Can you tell us about how you got started in photography?

My journey began with a love for fashion and its transformative power. I was fascinated by how clothing could communicate personality, mood, and individuality. This passion led me to become a stylist, focusing on creating looks that tell stories and connect deeply with people.

What is your favorite piece of work you've ever shot? (Include links)

"Urban Escapism" is one of my favorite projects because it perfectly captured my philosophy on fashion and individuality. It felt like a true representation of my creative vision as a stylist.

What was your passion driving you during your journey? Who or what prompted you to begin?

My passion lies in creating looks that reflect a person’s inner world. I’m inspired by the possibility of helping people express themselves through fashion, and I’m always searching for new ways to reveal unique aspects of a personality through style.

Can you tell me about an upcoming project you're working on and the idea behind it?

I’m currently working on a new project that explores the relationship between fashion and sustainability. The goal is to show how modern styling can reflect a conscious approach to clothing, while still allowing for creativity and self-expression.

Could you walk us through your photoshoot planning process?

My process begins with an idea or emotion I want to convey. For "Urban Escapism," the concept was about maintaining individuality in a world full of external pressures. From there, I work closely with photographers, models, and the creative team to ensure the styling and visual direction align with the message I want to communicate.

As a photography expert, what sets your work apart from other photographers?

What makes my work unique is my focus on emotions and storytelling through fashion. I create looks that aren’t just trendy but meaningful. My aim is to combine personal style with broader themes like identity and freedom, so every shoot feels like an intimate journey.

Where do you get your ideas for photoshoots?

Inspiration comes from various sources: urban life, art, and even casual conversations. I try to stay open to everything that can spark imagination and lead to a new idea.

Can you tell us about the most memorable moment you've had as a photographer and what experience you gained from that?

One of my most memorable moments was during the "Urban Escapism" shoot. We were shooting in a busy city square, where the model stood calmly among the rushing crowds. That moment perfectly captured the essence of the project—remaining calm and individual amidst chaos.

What are the most important components of an extraordinary photograph, in your opinion?

The key to a great photograph is the emotion and story it conveys. Technical details are important, but it’s the ability of the photo to make someone think or feel something that makes it stand out.

How do you strike a balance between your artistic expression and your client's expectations during a shoot?

It’s all about dialogue. I always discuss the client’s goals, but I also explain my creative perspective. Together, we find common ground so the result aligns with their expectations and stays true to my vision.

How do other artists influence your work? Are there any other photographers you look up to? Who?

I’m influenced by the works of photographers like Peter Lindbergh and Paolo Roversi, who emphasize narrative and emotion over perfection. Their ability to evoke raw human experiences through fashion photography continues to inspire my approach.

How do you enhance your vision after a session by post-processing your photos? Do you have a best-kept secret for editing processing that you'd like to share?

I’m deeply inspired by other creatives, especially those who push boundaries in their work. Designers like Alexander McQueen and photographers like Peter Lindbergh have influenced my approach, particularly in how they blend emotion with fashion to create powerful visual stories.
