Yangy Shao: The Rooftop

CALEB SCHAFTLEIN,

1. Could you please give us a little introduction and tell us about your first experience with photography? Who or what inspired you to begin photography?

It’s a long story, but I first touched a camera when I was 12 years old when I went on a family event. Following that, I became completely obsessed with the concept of capturing photographs in the moment. Actually, there was no real inspiration; I simply discovered that it is meaningful to take photographs of my friends and family and that the emotion is also visible in my photographs.

2. From your point of view, what are the most difficult aspects of professional photography?

If you want to make a living from photography, I believe you should study marketing. However, my university major was mathematics, which has nothing to do with photography, but I enjoy both photography and math. So, to my point, can be extremely difficult to get your audience to understand what you are trying to portray in your pictures and how you’re expressing yourself through them.

3. As the expert you are, what distinguishes your work from others, and what are the keys to mastering photography?

My friend told me that I have a unique thought process for shooting a picture and also making it expressive which I believe is due to my mathematical background.

4. What type of models do you prefer to shoot with? Why?

Models or non-models are both okay. I prefer photoshoots that are realistic and in the moment.

5. Are there any other photographers you look up to? Who?

I don’t look up to many photographers, but I consider myself to be equal to them. However, I know I can learn something from all the photographers around me, whatever their position is.

6. Can you walk us through your planning process for this photoshoot and how you went about conducting it?

This photoshoot was totally random because the model is my friend. And this shoot took place last year, when I was still a data analyst and before I officially became a full-time photographer.
